Pvt. Lavan Rivers, the son of the late Mary Rivers and Henry Backus Sr. was born in Florence, S.C. on July 29, 1943.  He departed this life on Saturday, January 19, 2019.

He was educated in Florence County Public School.  From 1967-1971, he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War . After serving 4 years, he resigned with an honorable discharge. When he returned home he gained employment with Charles Coal and Oil Company.

Lavan was a loving and giving friend that did his best for his family.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his daughter, Latonya Smalls of Jackson, Mississippi; one grandson, Tyrese Dubose of Darlington, SC;  a sister, Miss Shirley Rivers of New York City; one brother, Henry (Elenora) Backus, Jr.; one sister-in-law, Florence Backus of Florence, SC. A devoted niece, Genevieve Washington of Florence, SC and a devoted friend Clara Scott.  A host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
