Coach Henry Mack Dixon

The Celebration of Life for Coach Henry M. Dixon will be Friday, November 5, 2021 at Hannah-
Pamplico High School, 2055 S. Pamplico Highway, SC 29583. Public Viewing will only be from 12
NOON until 1:00 PM at the school with the Kappa Memorial service at 1:30 PM. Funeral Service
will begin at 2:00 PM in the Gymnasium with entombment following at Florence Memorial
Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to Backus Funeral Home, LLC. Coach Henry M. Dixon, was
born Feb. 26 in Bradenton, FL. He graduated Lincoln Memorial High School in Palmetto, FL. He
attended Florida A&M University and graduated from Allen University in Columbia. Upon
graduation he began his 53-year career at Gibbs High school in Pamplico, SC before joining the
Hannah-Pamplico School district. He coached basketball, football, baseball, tennis, track and
field and also held positions such as Asst. Principal, Athletic Dir., Principal, Guidance Counselor,
Transportation Dir. and Career Specialist. Coach was named a two-time S. C. State Track Coach
of the Year (1987 and 1990), over 30 Region Track Coach of the year awards, won two state
championships in track, state championship runners-up in 1993 and numerous region
championships. He has been the only track coach in the Gibbs and Hannah-Pamplico era to win
multiple state championships. He took the time over 10 years ago to become a certified United
States Track and Field Official. Coach was a proud member of the Florence Alumni Chap. of
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Surviving is his wife of 51 years, Letha C. Dixon; son, Girard
(Audrea) Dixon; daughters, Natasha (Leotis Gupton) Dixon and Leatrice (Leroy Fields) Dixon; 1
brother, 4 sisters, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
